Top 25 Indie Break Up Songs

When we were kids and sad, people tried their best to cheer us up. Want some ice cream honey? Don’t cry. As mature adults, we’d rather get messed up and wallow in our own self pity. We choose to listen to sad songs that we can relate to, rather than “c’mon, smile get happy” tunes and “i will survive”. I’ve had many a request from broken hearted friends to make a “perfect indie breakup mix cd“. There are two proven cures to heartache: time, and music. Your heart isn’t broken, it’s just bruised. With that being said, this one’s for you…(right click and save as to get mp3s).
Enjoy!
1. Elliott Smith-I Didn’t Understand
“You once talked to me about love and you painted pictures of a Never-Never Land. And I could’ve gone to that place, but I didn’t understand…”
2. The Radio Dept. – I Wanted You To Feel The Same
“It breaks my heart to say that when I was in pain, I wanted you to feel the same. But nothing gets you really, it’s a shame. I can’t believe you didn’t feel a thing…”
3. Pinback - Boo
“I still can’t get you off of my mind, I don’t think that we can pull this one off. We shall see, time will tell. What is time? And why does it taste like salt water inside of my mouth?…”
4. Stars - Your Ex-Lover is Dead
“It’s nothing but time and a face that you lose. I chose to feel it and you couldn’t choose. I’ll write you a postcard, I’ll send you the news from a house down the road from real love…”
5. Bon Iver – Skinny Love
“In the morning I’ll be with you, but it will be a different kind. I’ll be holding all the tickets, and you’ll be owning all the fines…”
6. The Appleseed Cast - The Fight Song
“We’re finding fault, when you kissed her or you slept with him, or you didn’t care. Now it all breaks, disintegrates. Well this is the last thing I’ll take…”
7. Sunset Rubdown - Us Ones In Between
“You are a waterfall, waiting inside a well. You are a wrecking ball, before the building fell. And I will mutter like a lover, who speaks in tongues…”
8. Ryan Adams – Come Pick Me Up
“I wish you would. Come pick me up. Take me out. Fuck me up. Steal my records. Screw all my friends, they’re all full of shit. With a smile on your face, and then do it again…”

11. Louis XIV - All The Little Pieces
“Nobody knows, Nobody knows that all the little pieces come apart. All the little pieces of your heart. All the little pieces come apart…”
12. The Weakerthans – Left and Leaving
“Memory will rust and erode into lists of all that you gave me: a blanket, some matches, this pain in my chest. The best parts of lonely…”

Time is Running Out is one of my favorite music songs. Stars at ACL!! ![]()
obviously “Excerpts from Various Notes Strewn About the Bedroom of April Connolly, Feb 24, 1997″ by Cursive deserves a place more than “The Radiator Hums.”
Comment by maaaark 09.08.08 @ 12:34 amNo Haligh, haligh, a lie, haligh by Bright Eyes? I agree about a perfect sonnet, but that song also deserves a space.
Comment by Jan 09.08.08 @ 6:11 pmLoveless by Okay, Wrecking Ball by Interpol, (As commercial as it totally is) Linger by the Cranberries, Asleep by the Smiths, Clear the Area, Headlock, and Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap, District Sleeps Alone Tonight by the Postal Service.
Comment by Sierra! 09.09.08 @ 2:05 amNice list… however, the greatest breakup song in the history of mankind is I am the Cosmos by Chris Bell. Chris was the Lennon to Alex Chilton’s McCartney in Big Start, and this is the title track from his only solo LP (which I believe was released after he died).
Plz avoid the horrible cover of this song by This Mortal Coil… they should have left it alone.
“Every night I tell myself I am the cosmos, I am the wind.. but that don’t get you back again.”
Comment by Tigerstripe 09.09.08 @ 8:16 amWhat about The Good Life’s “Album of the Year”? It’s a great relationship portrait with a fantastic breakup section.
Comment by Hank Altogether 09.09.08 @ 9:45 am[...] break-up songs Filed under: Uncategorized — ginavivinetto @ 11:33 am The Recycled Love Songs site lists Top 25 Indie Break-Up [...]
Pingback by Indie break-up songs « Gina Vivinetto’s Greatest Hits 09.09.08 @ 10:34 amI really highly recommend “No Children” by the Mountain Goats. Its so bitter.
Comment by Pathos 09.10.08 @ 2:33 pmWhat about some Carissa’s Wierd? I guess that’s my choice for downer music.
Comment by lucid 09.10.08 @ 2:51 pmc’mon, gotta be bright eyes - “its cool we can still be friends”
we still watch moooooovies… but we dont share the couch
Comment by paul 09.10.08 @ 3:31 pmGreat list, but “Happiness is a Warm Gun” isn’t exactly a break-up song. John wrote that one within a few months of first meeting Yoko, and it doesn’t have any specific meaning per se. The title came from a magazine-article title. John thought it was just madly cool that someone would write such a title, and ran with it.
Something about hob-nailed boots as well. Jolly good, those…
/ah
Comment by adam 09.10.08 @ 10:40 pm“Happiness is a Warm Gun”…what a delightful story. Before I posted this list, a friend of mine said that Happiness and The Radiator Hums should be on it. I put it in the “Honorable Mention” section to please him (as he is quite musically inclined, and mourns breakups rather well). However, I will now make certain to tell him that each has received an unfavorable comment, and that he needs to get his John/Yoko shit straight.
Comment by Stacie 09.10.08 @ 11:14 pmHow bout Love Will Tear Us Apart?
Comment by Dave 09.10.08 @ 11:23 pmElliot Smith is love! <3 I Love Waltz #2.
Comment by Selendrile 09.10.08 @ 11:49 pmYou should look into ‘untied’ by “The One A.M. Radio” ^_^ lol
Comment by Selendrile 09.10.08 @ 11:51 pmI think also “A Comet Appears” by the Shins is a good one.
Comment by sam 09.11.08 @ 8:52 amI agree with Sierra… Asleep by The Smiths is thee saddest song in the entire known universe, and yes I think it is a break up song..why not?
Comment by Cee 09.11.08 @ 12:12 pmSeriously, no Joy Division??? Really??? Come on, really???
Comment by Anonymous 09.11.08 @ 1:17 pmIf you want an angry break up song, “The Night I Lost the Will to Fight” by Cursive was a standby for me at one point.
Comment by Sean 09.12.08 @ 12:19 amGood list but it needs ‘About Today’ by The National.
Comment by ELz 09.12.08 @ 4:39 amTHE LAST GOODBYE - JEFF BUCKLEY
Comment by Banonymous 09.12.08 @ 4:45 amyay for having a band from my town! Lawrence, KS home of Appleseed Cast ![]()

Comment by krista 09.14.08 @ 6:51 pmNo Damien Rice? SERIOUSLY?
Comment by Clay 09.14.08 @ 10:23 pmWoke Up New by The Mountain Goats deserves to be on here so much it’s not true.
“The first time I made coffee for just myself, I made too much of it. But I drank it all, just ‘cos you hate it when I let things go to waste”.
One of the best couplets ever.
Comment by Girdag 09.15.08 @ 9:17 amjplanet will be happy to know that Aaron Hollingsworth is also out of Lawrence, Kansas. Funny coincidence.
Comment by Keido 09.15.08 @ 9:49 pmI LOVE!!! Jeremy Enigk. This makes me so so happy that someone else realizes his genius. ![]()
The Ataris - Summer Wind Was Always Our Song
Comment by Stellar 09.16.08 @ 5:58 pmProbably the ones that get me ever time are:
Ambulance LTD - Stay Where You Are
Heavy Lifting
I would have added “Honey Honey” by Feist.
Comment by Tracey 09.23.08 @ 2:59 amI concur. Woke up new is surely one of the greatest break up songs ever written. As is, Breaking up by Rilo Kiley although it’s not very sad.
Comment by Beck 09.23.08 @ 11:23 amI love Mew. Shespider is an underappreciated, yet wonderful song. good job.
Comment by Aly 09.25.08 @ 11:58 pmA Weather is a band that specializes in breakup mourning and cure.
The whole album Cove is amazing.
“I get gone on whiskey and cocaine
cough syrup and codeine
Watch me move like nothing you’ve seen”
If you haven’t heard the song Second Best by Pedro The Lion off the record Control it would be in your best interest to give it a spin. that is if you are going through a break-up of your own.
Comment by Schuylar 09.26.08 @ 12:02 pm“Good Woman” from Cat Power. Pity me, fools.
Comment by hectified 09.28.08 @ 1:11 amthank you :o)
Comment by Anonymous 09.28.08 @ 2:30 pmomg I have been looking for this blog forever. AND THE RADIATOR HUMS SHOULD BE ON THERE, NOT JUST A MENTION :[
Comment by jaz 09.28.08 @ 10:16 pmCarry You - Jimmy Eat World
Comment by Anonymous 09.28.08 @ 10:57 pmLet me second the Mountain Goats. If not Woke Up New (which could be about someone leaving for a long period of time) then you could go for Half Dead.
“It was raining outside, so I cleaned house today.
Spent half of the morning throwing old things away. Try not to get caught up; try to think like a machine. Focus in on the task, try not to think about what it means.”
I’m also a big fan of Alpha Omega.
“On the morning when you went away, the air was humid and the sky was grey. I had boiled peanuts for breakfast from Cairo, Georgia.”
Also, I think that Symmetry is a much better breakup song than Shespider…
Comment by Malefact 09.30.08 @ 6:53 pmAlso! For an (amicable) breakup, seriously how can you do without The Cooper Temple Cause - Blind Pilots? It is absolutely, mindblowingly, good.
Comment by Malefact 09.30.08 @ 6:54 pmA better Tegan & Sara song would’ve been “Call It Off”
Comment by Scott 10.02.08 @ 12:21 amHow about “Standing Outside a Broken Phone Booth with Money in My Hand” - Primitive Radio Gods.
The lyrics themselves aren’t all that heartbreaking. But the music plus the sample B.B. King singing “I’ve been downhearted, baby, ever since the day we met” is.
“Bad Diary Days” by Pedro The Lion/David Bazan. Definitely.
Comment by Stubaby 10.05.08 @ 3:20 amSTARVING YOUR FRIENDS by ENVY ON THE COAST is one of the saddest breakup songs of all time…listen to it!
Comment by Brittany 10.06.08 @ 4:24 pmWhat a great list. Thanks for posting this, especially with the links to listen to them. I’d add the album “Shoot Out the Lights” by Richard and Linda Thompson. That is a game changer, really.
Comment by Hallock Hill 10.12.08 @ 8:36 pmgreat list. a great addition would be “newsflash” by windmill
Comment by sylvia 10.13.08 @ 7:55 pmRilo Kiley - Pictures of Success
Earlimart - Happy Alone
I think these are a few I’d highly suggest, bc it also gives a sorrow but independent feeling. a silver lining, I suppose, for break ups =)
Comment by rachela 10.16.08 @ 2:14 amthis a really good playlist, especially bon iver’s skinny love. i’ve been listening to that one a lot lately.
i think that my favorite breakup song that isn’t on this list would gotta be ‘pink bullets’ by the shins
Comment by dylan 10.27.08 @ 6:48 pmBreaking up sucks. I would rather be punched in the face repeatedly by a 300lb sumo wrestler.
Comment by Uncle Indie YouRockRadio 10.28.08 @ 1:21 pmDamien Rice - Cheers Darlin
Comment by sn 10.29.08 @ 12:06 amSecondhand Serenade
Comment by Gregor 11.09.08 @ 1:40 pmThe Everybodyfields-Lonely Anywhere
Gone Away from Me- Ray Lamontagne
The Greatest Sum- The Avett Brothers
I think that my all-time favorite song could fit on this list; Never Meant by American Football.
“I just think its best
Because you cant miss what you forget
So lets just pretend
Everything and
Anything, between you and me
Was never meant”
But I have always agreed with Your Ex-lover Is dead and Fight Song as being in the top 5 best break-up songs ever. Good list.
Oh and that Radio Dept one, such a good pick, i havent heard that song in so long, i will have to get it back on my playlists.
Comment by Evan 11.10.08 @ 12:53 pmRadiohead - There, There
Blur - No Distance Left to Run
Yo La Tengo - Damage
Feist - Let it Die
The Beatles - Yesterday
The Velvet Underground - Pale Blue Eyes
Stay Away by The Honorary Title:
no I can’t dance ‘less it’s slow or sad
to a song that’s far less obvious
if you’re using me, do it slowly
make it last until I have to go
or stay away from, stay away from, stay away from me
I also listened to Perfect Sonnet on repeat one summer. Toxic break up, GREAT song.
Comment by Jess 12.03.08 @ 6:39 amOkay did anyone mention Shearwater - My Good Deed
that one tore me up for a whilee.. ahhh
Some of these selections are really good, but I wouldn’t call MUSE or RADIOHEAD or anything else that was on the Twilight soundtrack Indie.
Comment by Anna 12.12.08 @ 5:59 amcheer me up thankyou- new buffalo
AND THE MOST BEAUTIFULL SONG IN THE WORLD IS “apples and pairs”- slow club (youtube)……

“Will someone please call a surgeon
Who can crack my ribs and repair this broken heart
That you’re deserting for better company”
Pretty cool. You might also check out http://band.inyourshirt.tv as we’re working on promoting lesser known bands and that sounds like something we could have fun with.
Comment by ylluminate 12.26.08 @ 10:05 pmwhat about chicken pox by i’m from barcelona?
“you can’t have it once you’ve had it…”

Comment by George 01.06.09 @ 12:38 amHaha. I second bright eyes - it’s cool we can still be friends.
YAY IM GONNA GET REAL FUCKIN DRUUUUNK
Comment by Anonymous 01.07.09 @ 1:24 pmSECONDHAND SERENADE. Pretty much anything; It’s Not Over is sufficiently depressing, I’d say. The Last Song Ever, Goodbye, etc. But overall; much approval. Happiness Is A Warm Gun, interesting choice. I never thought of it as a break up song, but now you mention it…. =)
Comment by Anonymous 01.28.09 @ 10:09 pmHurricane Jane by Black Kids… upbeat but tinged with sadness.
“It’s Friday night and I ain’t got nobody, so what’s the use of making a bed?”
Comment by De 01.31.09 @ 7:45 amno one’s gonna love you by band of horses
Comment by Anonymous 02.07.09 @ 10:29 pmPretty good list. Especially the Ryan Adams song.
Some of these may not be indie but they sure have helped me wallow in self-pity after a nasty break up.
Wonderwall - Oasis
Guardian Angel - Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
The Scientist/Your Love Means Everything - Coldplay
Hurt - Nine Inch Nails
Some You Give Away - La Rocca
Pioneers - Tuung

called “On My Way” by “Who Are Those Guys”. You can hear for
free on their website: http://www.whoarethoseguys.com or there’s also a link to
Broadjam where you can download it.

Check out William Fitzsimmons, he has break up song after breakup song, they are epic. “I don’t feel it anymore” is stunning.
Also City and Colour - “constant knot”.

Missy Higgins (songs - the special two, warm whispers)
Angus and Julia Stone
Bob Evans (song - flame)
Whitley (song - lost in time)

‘Sort it Out’ by the Caesers is pretty damning. I also think ‘See you in Hell’ by Small Brown Bike is bitter and angry too. That’s how I roll after a break up or a crushing dissapoint of male kind.
Comment by Joanne 06.10.09 @ 7:15 amnone of these lists EVER mentions We Looked Like Giants by Death Cab For Cutie. it’s got me through many a break up.
Comment by Rita 06.15.09 @ 12:27 am3 libras - a perfect circle

Across Five Aprils[artist]- A Year From Now[song]
Comment by Anonymous 08.06.09 @ 4:39 pmInstead of “A Perfect Sonnet,” I would’ve chosen “It’s Okay, We Can Still Be Friends.” It’s very directly related to this theme. But “A Perfect Sonnet” is an amazing choice too.
Comment by Clover 08.27.09 @ 12:07 amWhen I saw the Weakerthans and thought of break up songs, I thought first of Sun In An Empty Room. I love that song as a break up song.
Comment by Tim E. 09.03.09 @ 2:57 am“All My Friends”- LCD Soundsystem, “The Great Escape”- Patrick Watson, “Lose You”- Pete Yorn, “On Tour With Zykos”- Okkervil River, “Homesick”- The Vines, “Everything I Build”- The Stills, “Heartbreaker”- Metronomy
Comment by Carly Awesome 09.07.09 @ 12:01 amWe all know there are enough sad indie songs to make a Top Billion Sad Indie Song lists. Bravo on picking a very nice 25. =]
Comment by McKenna 09.07.09 @ 11:09 pmSunset Rubdown’s ‘Us ones in Between’ is not a breakup song, nor is happiness is a warm gun. Those are ones I know just from skimming the list. The Beatles and Muse are also not “indie” bands
Comment by Orbulas 09.13.09 @ 3:13 pmSongs that have gotten me through heartbreak. Hope I don’t seem presumptuous for posting a long list. Also not really Indie or in playlist order, but still good… I think…

Comment by matt 09.17.09 @ 7:01 pmno radiohead?
“let down” hehehehe, awesome songs though =)
the format’s ‘dog problems’ should have made it past honorable mention. and the streets’ ‘dry your eyes’ should also be on there.
Comment by jason 09.22.09 @ 5:16 pmyeah “no children” by the mountain goats is probably my favorite break up song.
Comment by Anonymous 09.23.09 @ 6:11 pmMagnetic fields-if you don’t cry.
