Death Cab for Cutie released their seventh studio album “Narrow Stairs” today. While making the album, Death Cab producer and guitarist Chris Walla said this of Narrow Stairs, “thus far it’s pretty weird and pretty spectacular, lots of blood. It’s creepy and heavy.” In a Billboard interview he went on to use the word weird once more, “It’s really weird. It’s really, really good, I think, but it’s totally a curve ball, and I think it’s gonna be a really polarizing record. But I’m really excited about it. It’s really got some teeth. The landscape of the thing is way, way more lunar than the urban meadow sort of thing that has been happening for the last couple of records. It’s also louder and more dissonant. I think abrasive would be a good word to use.” In an interview with lead singer Ben Gibbard he said the album was something they enjoyed making, and felt that this time they had nothing to prove.

Rave reviews from the majors:
MTV: “Unquestionably the best thing Death Cab has ever done.”
Rolling Stone: “A dark, strangely compelling record that trades the group’s bright melancholy for something nearer to despair.”

Death Cab will be making a stop at Nokia Theatre in Grand Prairie, Texas with Rogue Wave on June 17th during their tour (no Austin dates this time around). I’ve seen Rogue Wave twice this year, but where’s the Austin Death Cab love? …Road trip it is.

Portishead – The Rip – Official Video

The new Portishead video for “The Rip” came out yesterday. This is the first video from the band’s 2008 album, Third, which was officially released on April 28th. As the name implies, Third is the band’s third album, and the first to proceed their self-titled album released in 1997. In my teens, I played the album Dummy out to a point of compulsion. I’ve heard this new album may induce the same obsessive behavior. This song and video are both amazing.

Portishead – The Rip
from Third, 2008

Portishead – The Rip Lyrics
As she walks in the room, scented and tall.
Hesitating once more.
And as I take on myself, and the bitterness I felt,
I realize that love flows.

Wild, white horses, they will take me away.
And the tenderness I feel will send the dark underneath
Will I follow?

Through the glory of life, I will scatter on the floor.
Disappointed and sore.
And in my thoughts I have bled, for the riddles I’ve been fed.
Another lie moves over.

Wild, white horses, they will take me away.
And the tenderness I feel will send the dark underneath
Will I follow?

Wild, white horses, they will take me away.
And the tenderness I feel will send the dark underneath
Will I follow?

Past Portishead Favorites:

Storm, in the morning light. I feel. No more can I say, frozen to myself. I got nobody on my side, and surely that ain’t right.
Portishead – Roads (Unofficial Video), from the album Dummy, 1994

After time the bitter taste, of innocence decent or race. Scattered seeds, buried lives, mysteries of our disguise revolve. Circumstance will decide.
Portishead – Sour Times (Unofficial Video), from the album Dummy, 1994

But the thoughts we try to deny, take a toll upon our lives. We struggle on in depths of pride, tangled up in single minds.
Portishead – It Could Be Sweet (Unofficial Video), from the album Dummy, 1994

How we’ve failed and I feel like I do. It’s only you, who can tell me apart. And it’s only you, who can turn my wooden heart
Portishead – Only You, from the album Portishead, 1997

Is it all as it seems? So unresolved, so unredeemed. If I remain, how will I know? And it’s been so long, that I can’t be sure
Portishead – Humming, from the album Portishead, 1997

The video for Tokyo Police Club’s “In a Cave” came out today. It was filmed in an old victorian mansion in Memphis TN, and was directed by Olan Rogers who won the ‘Breaking The Video’ contest. In a Cave is included on the band’s first LP, Elephant Shell, which was released on April 22nd of this year. I’ve seen this band perform a few times, and highly recommend checking out a live show.

You’re my cave and I’ve been hiding out. Will you tell me a little bit about, a bit about yourself?

Tokyo Police Club – In a Cave Lyrics
I threw darts at a spinning globe,
swapping out passport photos.
I walked west to the setting sun.
Every single step I grow, another second young.

All my hair grows in.
Wrinkles leave my skin.
But still, don’t fade.
I’ll be back again when the tide is in some day.

I don’t know who else to ask.
Sitting in the dark, holding an empty glass.

Stained my teeth with more red wine.
I’m a romantic, but never pearly white.

All my hair grows in.
Wrinkles leave my skin.
But still, don’t fade.
I’ll be back again when the tide is in some day.

Elephant Shell,
You’re my cave and I’ve been hiding out.
Will you tell me a little bit about,
a bit about yourself?

Elephant Shell,
You’re my cave and I’ve been hiding out.
Will you tell me a little bit about,
a bit about yourself?

Last Mother’s Day I went to a Bright Eyes concert, so on this one year anniversary I must pay tribute to my favorite current singer/songwriter. It was at this concert that Conor Oberst told the crowd, “Texas has taught me a lot about forgiveness. I love Texas.” (Checkout the lyrics to “When the President Talks to God” to understand the forgiveness he is referring to. NBC recently removed his live performance from YouTube). Oberst will be back in the sarcastically loved state of Texas for the ACL Festival in September of 2008 with the Mystic Valley Band. This is Oberst’s first solo project in thirteen years, and the Austin stop will be his first U.S. performance with the new band (he has three performances prior to hitting the Lone Star State, two in England and one in Ireland). In addition to Bright Eyes, he has also performed in the bands Commander Venus, Park Ave. and Desaparecidos. His new solo album was recorded in Tepoztlán, México, which is known for Aztec magic and extra-terrestrial sightings. Update: It was released on August 5, 2008 and you can get it now over at Merge Records.

Before recording this album solo, Oberst released the 2007 album, Cassadaga, which is named after the city in Florida that is known as the “Psychic Center of the World”. The album also comes with a spectral decoder, which I’ve managed to lose, but while in my possession helped to uncover secret album cover translations such as “the past presents the future” and “swollen saints bathing in a backwards river under a sliver of a moon”.  The latest Bright Eyes album didn’t make it to my all time favorite list but from what I’ve decoded in a few recent live recordings, Oberst may keep some of the recent country twang of Cassadaga while also going back to his early Bright Eyes roots. Update: Nope. His new self-titled solo release “Conor Oberst” is definitely more “travel experiences” (count the number of times you hear a Mexico reference) and less heart breaking, lyrics reaching “Bright Eyes”.  However, the earlier albums and a few good tracks from his recent creations are enough to keep me hooked. My psychic powers still tell me that Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band will still be the highlight of my 2008 ACL experience.

A Handful of My Favorite Bright Eyes Words and Songs from Past Albums:

“There is a man holding a megaphone, he must have been the voice of God. The bystanders claimed they saw angels flying up and down the block. Well, they must have been attached to wires. I’d seen one laying in the lawn with a broken arm, so I called 911. Well that’s one less founded opinion. One more cause for a dispute. So the street filled, like a basin, up with cameras and their crews. And they washed away the rumors leaving just the concrete truth. It was a spectacle. No, I, I mean a miracle…”
Bright Eyes – From a Balance Beam

“When the president talks to God, are the conversations brief or long? Does he ask to rape our womens rights and send poor farm kids off to die? I doubt it…”
Bright Eyes – When the President Talks to God

“But once you knew a girl and you named her lover, danced with her in kitchens through the greenest summer. Autumn came, she disappeared. You can’t remember where she said she was going to. But you know that she is gone, ’cause she left you a song that you don’t want to sing…”
Bright Eyes – A Perfect Sonnet

“The drunk kids, the Catholics, they’re all about the same. They’re waiting for something. Hoping to be saved…”
Bright Eyes – Drunk Kid Catholic

“And we’ll just keep working on the problem we know we’ll never solve, of love’s uneven remainder. Our lives are fractions of a whole. But if the world could remain within a frame, like a painting on a wall, then I think we would see the beauty then. We would stand staring in awe, at our still lives posed like a bowl of oranges…”
Bright Eyes – Bowl of Oranges (Official Video)

“We must talk in every telephone, get eaten off the web. We must rip out all the epilogues from the books we have read. And to the face of every criminal strapped firmly to a chair- we must stare, we must stare, we must stare…”
Bright Eyes – At The Bottom Of Everything (Official Video)

“And you said this is the first day of my life, I’m glad I didn’t die before I met you. But now I don’t care I could go anywhere with you. And I’d probably be happy…”
Bright Eyes – First Day of My Life (Official Video)
(With a cameo by Bitch and Daniela Sea)

“I’ve got a hunger and I can’t seem to get full. I need some meaning I can memorize. The kind I have always seems to slip my mind. But you, but you…you write such pretty words, but life’s no storybook. Love’s an excuse to get hurt. And to hurt…”
Bright Eyes – Lover I Don’t Have to Love (Official Video)

“Sometimes I worry that I’ve lost the plot. My twitching muscles tease my flippant thoughts. I never really dreamed of heaven much, until we put him in the ground. But it’s all I’m doing now. Listening for patterns in the sound. Of an endless, static, sea…”

But I’m a head case if I don’t keep moving, and my head hurts if I don’t sit still. It’s an itch that I never stop scratching. It’s a hole that I never quite fill.

Electric President – Insomnia
from Electric President, 2006

Electric President – Insomnia Lyrics
There’s a light bulb dangling from string,
it’s slowly swaying up over my head now.
As I jot down the words that’ll never be sung,
and wait for my headache to numb.
And the wind sounds as if the world’s sighing,
and the moon’s just a torn fingernail,
as the TV flickers and hums by the wall,
and I wait for my eyesight to fade.

So, So, So.
It’s so damn slow.
So, So, So.
It’s so damn slow.

While the bright eyed choke on ambition,
and the old folks circle their graves.
And the young ones are busy destroying their names,
and you’re still just wasting away.
I sit and watch the screen for a message,
some kinda sign that says we’re okay.
But the screen stays blank til I turn the thing off,
and wait for my conscience to break.

So, So, So.
It’s so damn slow.
So, So, So.
It’s so damn slow.

And I hope you’re learning to listen.
And I hope you’re learning to stay.
And I hope you find what you’re missing.
And I hope that you’re making you’re way.
But I’m a head case if I don’t keep moving,
and my head hurts if I don’t sit still.
It’s an itch that I never stop scratching.
It’s a hole that I never quite fill.

So

Jitterbug Vipers – When I Get Low I Get High

After a night of being vehicle and homeless, and the irony of the unchecked “make copy of keys” line. Rethinking that recycled undone to-do list that sits patiently waiting in what recently acted as an ill-equipped overnight bag. After home hopping to three different friend locations, in three different parts of town, with three different adventures. Missing a concert I really wanted to see. Having to borrow late night hits from an albuterol inhaler. A breakfast of a mom’s homemade cookie. Spending the day at work in a loaned tank top that boasts a website for gay male porn. In wine ladened jeans that hide busted knee caps from slipping on soap suds in AFOM’s shower. Looking at a freshly printed receipt for five hundred and sixty six dollars and sixty nine cents…ouch! ouch.

I hear this perfectly timed song on KVRX, and I laugh. A lot. :)

The black and white photograph “Candy Darling on her Deathbed” taken by Peter Hujar, was used on the cover for Antony and the Johnson’s “I Am a Bird Now” album. Candy Darling (November 24, 1944 – March 21, 1974) was a transsexual who starred in two Andy Warhol films. On her deathbed, she wrote the following letter meant for Warhol and his followers, “Unfortunately before my death I had no desire left for life. I am just so bored by everything. You might say bored to death. Did you know I couldn’t last? I always knew it. I wish I could meet you all again.” Her picture was also used as the album cover for The Smiths single, “Sheila Take a Bow” and she is referenced in Lou Reed’s 1972 song, Walk on the Wild Side: “Candy came from out on the island. In the backroom she was everybody’s darling. But she never lost her head, even when she was given head. She says, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side.” She is also referred to in The Velvet Underground song, “Candy Says”, as well as Morissey’s song in reference to her last letter, “You Know I Couldn’t Last”.

from I Am a Bird Now, 2005

Antony and the Johnsons – Hope There’s Someone Lyrics
Hope there’s someone who’ll take care of me
when I die, will I go?

Hope there’s someone who’ll set my heart free.
Nice to hold, when I’m tired.

There’s a ghost on the horizon
When I go to bed, how can I fall asleep at night?
How will I rest my head?

Oh, I’m scared of the middle place between light and nowhere.
I don’t want to be the one, left in there.
Left in there.

There’s a man on the horizon.
Wish that I’d go to bed.
If I fall to his feet tonight, will allow, rest my head.

So here’s hoping I will not drown or paralyze in light.
And godsend I don’t want to go, to the seal’s watershed.

Hope there’s someone who’ll take care of me
when I die, will I go?

Hope there’s someone who’ll set my heart free.
Nice to hold, when I’m tired.

Stop Canada’s Seal Hunt! This song has no correlation to the issue at hand rather than the double meaning of the word “club”, yet before pushing my environmental issues and concerns on others I do like to provide some background music. “Back in the day” I used to listen to this song during the aftermath of a long night out. Now, I can’t help but to think of slaughtered baby seals. :(

Click on the image below to find out what you can do (and do it!)

stop canada seal hunt

Shock pictures: Is this what the Canadian government means by ‘humane’ slaughter?
From the Daily Mail article: “The great tragedy of the slaughter is that it was stopped 25 years ago, following a ban on the import of seal pelts into the European Union. But the Canadian government eventually found a loophole and ruthlessly exploited it. Five years ago, the cull re-started with a vengeance when the authorities ordered the battering to death of a million baby seals. Since then, another 1.5 million baby seals have been slaughtered- almost one-third of the seal population. Every year, British and European politicians have rushed to condemn the slaughter. Yet every year they have failed to take concrete action.”

Ova Looven – Lust for Svirda (Eschers Reflexion Remix) Lyrics
How long, could this really go on?
Some things need testing.
Nothing comes from the waves of the radio.
And, that’s so typical.

It doesn’t matter how far I drive.
And everything that catches my memory’s eyes.
This is for the resisting mind.

All the microscopes I own.
I couldn’t find the words that are stuck in the memory.

Green lights, fills up the windows of my car.
Drive so much faster.
Trees fall, over me like a waterfall.
Feel so protected.

All the animals live outside.
Don’t you think they’d feel the weight of a suicide mind?
If they did, they’d grieve like us.

Like a roller coaster ride,
you never know it’s over until your memory lies.

I know you see me, but I can’t see you.
