from Wake Up, Thunderbabe, 2007

Download The Battle Royale – Race Car mp3 at RCRD LBL (while available).

Repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat. Rewind, rewind, rewind. AFOM and I, with our shared obsession for lyrics and analysis, have devised the following words for this song. They weren’t posted anywhere else, so we couldn’t leave it alone. No, no, oh, no.
UPDATE: Mark Ritsema (synth, vocals) responded to my request to fill in the blanks. So here they are, revised. He said I was “pretty close!”. I’ll take that as a compliment. John Pelant sings lead vocals on this particular song.

The Battle Royale – Race Car Lyrics
No, oh, oh.
Why don’t you leave it alone?
Oh, oh, oh.
Who are you to get known?
When will you be done?
Did you forget where you came from?
I don’t wanna feel,
what you feel.

No, no, oh, no.
No, no, oh, no.

Back on the high speed, don’t you wanna meet me?
I don’t think they’d ever see.
Look what you’ve done to me.
Now, who can I trust?
After all, you got the best of us.
The kids are doing old things.
There must be bells inside their heads that ring.
Even though it’s hard to.
Oh it’s hard to say right now.

In the late night.
In the late night (we’ve lost the way how)?

Don’t you wanna know oh oh?
I couldn’t ever show
you me

inside.

Don’t stay.
Not tonight.

I’ll forget it, you’ll forget it.
I don’t wanna know.
I don’t wanna know.
I’ll forget it, you’ll forget it.
I don’t wanna know.
I don’t wanna know.
I’ll forget what you said.
Come back to us
if you can

I’ll forget what you said
now.

No, no, uh-oh, no.
No, no, uh-oh, no.

Maybe you (can follow)?, maybe you can call us.
I don’t think you’ll ever know, the pain were goin through.

If you don’t already own it, buy The Battle Royale – Wake Up, Thunderbabe here (…and you can graciously thank the band later).

i will possess your heart

The video for Death Cab for Cutie’s track, I Will Possess Your Heart, came out today. The song is from their Narrow Stairs album, due out on May 13th. They did go “major”, but the indie love is still there (for example, keeping this song eight minutes long, cut-free, and starting it with a four and a half minute long instrumental). These lyrics aren’t quite as magical as some of the Death Cab classics (see: Title and Registration and Lack of Color), yet they are magical enough…because! It’s Death Cab!

Recent Interesting Death Cab Collaboration Tidbits:
* Ben Gibbard contributed vocals to Nada Surf’s track, “See These Bones” (…Do you remember when the light was low? Do you remember when it fell? Do you remember when you went to her house, remember ringing the bell?)
* Chris Walla, who released a 2008 solo album called “Field Manual”, also contributed to and co-produced Tegan and Sara’s album, “The Con“, released in 2007.

I will possess your heart. You reject my advances and desperate plea. I won’t let you let me down, so easily. So easily.

Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Possess Your Heart
from Narrow Stairs, 2008

Death Cab for Cutie – I Will Possess Your Heart Lyrics
How I wish you could see
the potential, the potential,
of you and me.

It’s like a book elegantly bound
but in a language that you
can’t read, just yet.

You gotta spend some time, love.
You gotta spend some time with me,
and I know that you’ll find love,
I will possess your heart.

You gotta spend some time, love.
You gotta spend some time with me,
and I know that you’ll find love,
I will possess your heart.

There are days when outside
your window, I see my reflection
as I slowly pass.

And I long for this mirrored
perspective when we’ll be lovers,
lovers at last.
You gotta spend some time, love.
You gotta spend some time with me,
and I know that you’ll find love,
I will possess your heart.

You gotta spend some time, love.
You gotta spend some time with me,
and I know that you’ll find love,
I will possess your heart.

I will possess your heart.
I will possess your heart.

You reject my advances
and desperate plea.

I won’t let you let me down,
so easily, so easily.

You gotta spend some time, love.
You gotta spend some time with me,
and I know that you’ll find love,
I will possess your heart.

You gotta spend some time, love.
You gotta spend some time with me,
and I know that you’ll find love,
I will possess your heart.

You gotta spend some time, love.
You gotta spend some time with me,
and I know that you’ll find love,
I will possess your heart.

I will possess your heart.
I will possess your heart.

The single for “My Year in Lists” will be released on April 14th. The song was already included on the “Hold On Now, Youngster…” album released in February, but like any good single- there will be more than one track on it (three new ones, to be exact).

Short and sweet, and bitter. I love this song like a sour patch kid.

Los Campesinos! – My Year in Lists
from Hold on Now, Youngster…, 2008

Los Campesinos! – My Year in Lists Lyrics
You said “send me stationary to make me horny”,
So I always write you letters, in multicolors.
Decorating envelopes, for foreplay.
Damn extended metaphors, I get carried away.
On the back of a natural disaster, fixed with parcel tape and with kids sticking plasters
Nothing says ‘I miss you’ quite like war poetry carved in your door with a stanley knife

My year in lists, stomping on your fingers as you’re clinging on to the abyss.
So put on every winter coat that you’ve owned since ’98.
And every midnight sees the countdown to another awful day.

I cherish with fondness the day (before) I met you.
I cherish with fondness the day (before) I met you.
I cherish with fondness the day (before) I met you.

On your request, I compile a list.
Of my top five resolutions for this year (one!)
I declined ’cause I decided that I (two!)
Do not believe in the new year anymore (three!)
And you must confess that at times like these
hopefulness is tantamount to hopelessness (four!)
And I accept that it’s time for a change but not in
Places like this with people like these (five! five! five! five! five!)

My year in lists, stomping on your fingers as you’re clinging on to the abyss.
So put on every winter coat that you’ve owned since ’98
And every midnight sees the countdown to another awful day

I cherish with fondness the day (before) I met you.
I cherish with fondness the day (before) I met you.
I cherish with fondness the day (before) I met you.

Remix, 2006

Cagedbaby – Hello There Lyrics
I watched you breathing as the night it slips away.
I get the feeling that you’re planning not to stay.
But you’re the only one, the only one I love.
There’s no deceiving you were dancing from above.

I came and saw you on the corner of delight,
the way you flicked your hair upon the pale moonlight.
You came and spoke to me and put me to the test.
Oh don’t you realize that I’m better than the rest.
Give me a reason not to feel this way was true,
I would have waited here forever to see you, oh yeah.

Give me a reason to stop playing in the rain.
I watched you breathing and I felt your every pain.
I saw your face as it got swallowed by the light.
And you’re my only one, my only one delight.
And when you sleep talk, yeah I write the things you say.
And I interpret that you wanted me to stay.

Give me a reason to stop playing with your heart.
You’ve got to feel it, got to feel it from the start.
You’ve got to feel it, got to feel it from the start.
You’ve got to feel it, got to feel it from your heart.

I watch my dreams they tumble down, they tumble down.
I have no feeling, have no memory now.
Stop playing with my heart, stop playing with my heart…

Prefuse 73 – The Class of 73 Bells (with School of Seven Bells)

Somber walk home at 12:fourty five in the morning. In a long interactive music video, set to the tune of my favorite playlist. A doorway blares my least favorite fatboy slim track. My most favorite, I have yet to hear. “At pure” one electronic invitation reads. The name alone underwhelms me and like an Angel t-shirt, I know that the description means it is anything but. I keep walking. “I like your shirt. I’m good friends with the lead singer, Ron? Remy-K? Rami?” Some guy proudly announces friendship with the star of my band T, yet struggles to recall this friend’s first name. I don’t correct him. I don’t really say anything. Out one door, it closes. I keep walking. Headphones on, scowl on, masking happy thoughts. I keep my two foot’s steps in pace with these two bass drums. One moving faster, one sounding much better than the other.

Prefuse 73 (Feat. School of Seven Bells) – Class Of 73 Bells Lyrics
I am neither breather nor speaker,
I am neither walker nor sleeper.
I am neither sister, brother, son, nor daughter.
Solely in my chest is my heart a drum of water.

I am under no disguise.

hungry for a holiday jealous like the moon

Conor Oberst is an amazing singer/songwriter, my favorite, but credit for these lyrics go to the lead singer of The Album Leaf, Jimmy LaVelle. He wrote the song for Oberst to sing and it was released in a series limited to a thousand copies, only available to subscribers. And…it’s awesome.

Bright Eyes and The Album Leaf – Hungry for a Holiday
from Collaboration Series No. 1, 2002

Bright Eyes and The Album Leaf – Hungry for a Holiday Lyrics
The indecencies of city streets.
The cleaners’ sweeping trucks from nine to noon.
And the factories make clouds to keep the sun from being jealous like the moon.
While the husband holds his house he hates his children for being green when he is gray.
And his wife, she likes to talk on telephones but just to people far away.
Well, the big surprise was televised on a crowded couch their eyes grew wide and wet.
Oh, was it really such a sad event?
You could capture this with camera clips, but it don’t exist just light on negatives.
Another number on the birthday cake.
You should act your age.

We were hungry for a holiday won’t cooperate with the calendar we found.
Just scattered snow-like Styrofoam and sang our Christmas carols all through town.
And the voices soared.

The people joined with silver coins they filled our cupping hands, hands, hands.
And we all agreed, the charity was much in need.
Yes, a noble cause at that.
And I met a man, a mannequin who stood so still I knew he was afraid.
And he preferred a place of permanence to the awful guessing game of choice and change.
Well, the big surprise was televised on a crowded couch our eyes grew wide and wet.
Oh yes, it’s really such a sad event
You can’t capture this with camera clips.
No, it don’t exist just light on negatives.
Another candle on a birthday cake.
And a wish you make.

Well, if the costume fits, keep wearing it but no Halloween could quite account for this.
I guess you’re getting into character.

Or just be yourself, if that would help or sink completely into someone else.

You dreamt of mountains but sometimes a hole, is more comfortable.
