Introducing The Mary Onettes – the most underrated band out of Jönköping, Sweden. “Puzzles” is the latest release from Islands, their highly anticipated second full-length studio album due out on November 4th. I did a search for the lyrics and…nada, zilch, zero, nothin’.

Lone Star Indie Bash at the Brewery – October 24th, 2009

The “National Beer of Texas” is inviting fans to win tickets to a one day concert on Saturday, October 24th at the historic Lone Star Brewery. Created in 1884 for business and recently restored for pleasure, the Brewery sits in the beautiful (but not as cool as Austin) city of San Antonio, Texas.

Texas faves like Austin’s Ben Kweller, San Antonio’s Charlie Robison and Dallas’ Jonathan Tyler will be performing as well as other boot-wearin’ artists. The event will feature food stands, and to quote the most delightful line of the Press Release… “concert goers will be able to enjoy Lone Star Beer.”

Anthony D’Amato to Recycled Love Songs on the track “Skeleton Key”:

“Skeleton Key” came out all at once, which is unusual. Most songs come to me in bits and pieces, but “Skeleton Key” just poured out in the middle of the night. The idea of the song is that you can beat yourself up over things that go wrong (in relationships or anywhere in your life for that matter), or you can learn to be happy with what you have. I think I was doing a lot of the former at the time. But what you come to realize is that if you beat yourself up enough, you’ll reach a point where you can look in the mirror and not even recognize that reflection. And that’s far worse than anything that might have led to it.

So the singer of this song is at the tipping point. He doesn’t like what he sees in the mirror; he’s flat on his back clawing at the dirt with his hands. And the question is, do you bury yourself in that hole or do you get back up? Hopefully this song helps you get back up.

The Winter Sounds to Recycled Love Songs on the track “Trophy Wife”:

“Trophy Wife was recorded as a demo in the middle of last year. We had decided at that point that the next record: “Church of the Haunted South” was going to be in some ways a retelling of ‘Gone with the Wind’. After reading the book, I felt a strong connection to the characters and found lots of amazing metaphors to my personal life even connections to the struggles that the band was going through. After a year and a half of non-stop touring, after 12 people had come and gone, there was only Clayton and I left. With no money to record, no label, and a history of leaving members, it took everything we had to keep pushing forward. We recorded this song in one day @ DARC in Athens.

The song and by extension the album speaks of personal experience through the different characters of the book and especially in Trophy Wife plays the male female roles of falling in and out of love and especially teetering on the edge of fully committing on the alter through marriage versus wanting to run away. Stay young, stay in love, find love again, hope for the future etc… Lines like “I couldn’t take this war from you. Dividing lines were drawn right through” speak of the fever that came over the people of the south as they inched closer to civil war.

The old south was money, simple, philosophical lives, summer evenings, ballroom dances and cookouts and that world changed. Husbands went off to war and were killed. I imagined the skin and bones of a starved soldier dying on the battlefield with a cold wind biting at his face crying “take me away from here please” as he falls asleep dreaming of sunset over a Savannah lake on a balcony with the woman he loves, the trophy wife, his reason for being… as a child might long for something he doesn’t need, love or fully understand.

No amount of great feelings survive the cruelty of war, the fickle heart of young love or the spell society cast over us with its great pressure to commit, to KNOW, even if it doesn’t make sense, that you will take this path, cause everyone else has gone down it and whether or not they are happy is irrelevant, what defines their success must define yours, and on and on…”

“I wrote it a long time ago and had a go at recording it for my first album. The solo version of it didn’t quite work, but the best things in life are worth waiting for. It was always meant to be a Factory Kids song, even before FK existed…” -Tim

Checkout Austin’s newest all-original, all-girl bands at the Girls Rock Camp Austin showcases. Camp bands will show off what they’ve learned at camp and rock the house with original tunes. Saturday’s showcase will also feature a silent auction for autographed rock items both classic and contemporary, gift certificates from local merchants, and SXSW wristbands. All proceeds support scholarships for low-income campers.

At Girls Rock Camp Austin, girls 9-17 learn to play instruments, write songs, form bands, and command the stage. Campers explore the history of women in rock and meet professionals in journalism, public relations, talent management, and audio engineering. Girl in a Coma, UME, and Rosie Flores are among the artists performing and teaching at Girls Rock Camp Austin 2009.

Girls Rock Camp Austin provides a positive, all-female environment that offers musical instruction as well as a variety of workshops and performances. Jared Paul Boulanger to Recycled Love Songs on the track “Never Mix, Never Worry”:

“I wrote this song along with the B-Side song (Rose Puzzles) about 2 months ago while watching the Elizabeth Taylor/Richard Burton film ‘Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolfe’… Alot of the lyrics, including the title of (NMNW) are about the main characters relationship in the film. I usually always cast myself as a character in movies I watch and it’s probably my biggest inspiration for writing and feeling out situations in a lyrical sort of rhyme scheme. This time it was Richard Burton’s perspective I was kinda digging on. As a band we were just really digging playing these songs live and wanted to put out a very different-sounding release before our next album comes out in December ’09. The 7″ record was recorded in 2 sessions at KVRX in Austin by Kayla Croft and The Treehouse in Houston by Steve Christensen. The latter of whom also mixed the record. The record is available August 30th and comes on limited edition colored vinyl in screen-printed jackets, but listeners can stream the tracks from myspace, facebook and last fm now!”

Brandon Kinder to Recycled Love Songs on the track “Like Ice in Water“:

“This was the very first song we wrote for 20,000 Ghosts. I was having a lot of trouble writing any songs for the album–almost like writers block–there was nothing coming out that I felt good about.

One day while I was recording on someone else’s project at a studio I was worked at, I texted a local friend in Austin who is a singer-songwriter and said ‘I’m having a lot of trouble writing these songs, feeling so empty.

Her response was; you’re not empty, you’re just collecting.
Which is a statement that really stuck out to me. I kept thinking about it. Profound, really.

So, ‘Like Ice in Water’ is really a song about trying to write a song and not being able to.”
